Through the generous support of The Doctors Company Foundation and the University of Illinois at Chicago�s (UIC) Institute for Patient Safety Excellence, we will be bringing twenty medical student leaders to Colorado this summer to engage with international patient safety leaders and educators for the Seventh Annual Telluride Patient Safety Educational Roundtable:

�Dilemmas Surrounding Medical Errors and Adverse Events: Teaching Caregivers Effective Communication Skills to Overcome the Multiple Barriers to Transparency"

This will be the second year of our Telluride Scientific Research Center (TSRC) Patient Safety Summer School for medical students held in conjunction with the Telluride Patient Safety Educational Roundtable.

This year�s seventh annual patient safety educational roundtable will once again bring critical stakeholders together in a highly interactive and productive format to addresses ethical, professional, legal and economic dilemmas regarding open disclosure and the growing need for effective communication skills when medical errors and adverse events occur.

Telluride Patient Safety Educational Roundtable Vision:
To create an annual retreat where experts in patient safety and health science education can come together with patients and consumers in a relaxed and informal setting to discuss, develop and refine health science education that supports a culture of patient safety, transparency and optimal outcomes in patient care.

Telluride Patient Safety Summer School for Medical Students Vision:
To engage future physicians in educational conversations with leading patient safety stakeholders from medicine, nursing, public health and health administration, applied health professions, government, law, insurance, and patient advocates to discuss, explore, and develop an innovative, immersive curriculum focused on open and honest communication with patients and families following medical error. Bringing these stakeholders together to jointly build a comprehensive curriculum is an important first step towards widespread adoption of policies of �full disclosure� with the ultimate goal of improved patient safety and quality healthcare over the long-term.
The specific aims of the summer school include: (1) To exchange information and views regarding medical errors, full disclosure, and open and honest communication following a patient safety incident among a diverse group of professionals involved in medical liability, organizational leadership, and healthcare practice; (2) To explore and/or clarify pertinent information related to the concept of full disclosure following a patient safety incident or medical error; (3) To share experiences related to medical errors, full disclosure, and open and honest communication following a patient safety incident; (4) To gain knowledge on the current models of open and honest communication in practice today and explore the barriers and facilitators of adoption for each of the professions identified; (5) To explore the relationship of organization culture in facilitating the development of such models of open and honest communication in practice, and methods of creating open organization cultures; (6) To develop an innovative curriculum for an intensive immersion in team-oriented open and honest communication between patients, families and caregivers; (7) To disseminate the outcomes of the workshop, making the tools and toolkits available within the public domain.
