Workshop Details
Cystic Fibrosis: Ecology, Evolution, and Eradication
07/27/2009 - 08/02/2009
Meeting Description:

Bacteriophages represent the largest unsequenced biological dataset and thus one of the most active frontiers for biology. Phages are (1) potential next generation magic bullets to replace antibiotics, (2) major players in biogeochemical cycles including CO2, (3) represent the dominant mechanism for horizontal gene transfer, and (4) have important self assembling properties useful for nanotech assembly. Large metagenomic datasets are providing a flood of new information on phage diversity, distribution, and community structure. The focus of the workshop is to extend and unify mathematical models constructed from these datasets to give a comprehensive understanding of phage behavior, communities and dynamics.

Notes:

GOAL: IDENTIFY WEAKNESSES IN THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS ECOSYSTEM THAT CAN BE THERAPUTICALLY EXPLOITED...

Possible Products
A) Models of CF lung that help us identify evolutionary and ecological instabilities
B) Identify missing datasets that are critical for managing CF as an ecosystem
C) Exchange information amongst biologists, doctors, and mathematicians

Possible talks/discussion sessions
Paul Rainey - Evolutionary instabilities and the CF lung
Forest Rohwer - Microbial ecology and relationship to CF lung
Peter Salamon - Ecological models and uses for disease treatments
Doug Conrad - Clinicians view of treating CF
Dana Willner - Viral communities in the CF lung
Martin Holm Rau - Pseudomonas in Cystic Fibrosis children

Be prepared to give chalk talks and/or Powerpoint about your work...especially things that you think are important.
